Baylor’s Castellaw Communications Center, home to the Department of Journalism, Public Relations & New Media, is set for renovations as early as 2026.

The Department of Communication’s relocation to a new building last spring opened up more opportunities for the Film and Digital Media and JPR&NM departments, which will continue to share the Castellaw space.

"Faculty members are excited about how a refreshed and updated Castellaw will create new opportunities for our students," said Dr. Alec Tefertiller, associate professor and chair of the department's facilities committee. "It gives us a chance to think about what our students need to be media professionals in the twenty-first century. I know we are looking forward to having a facility that reflects the evolving media landscape."

Proposed upgrades include a broadcast and multimedia studio, a social media lab dedicated to digital storytelling and analytics, revamped classrooms and restrooms, and vibrant, collaborative spaces designed to encourage teamwork and innovation.

“Student Media is excited about the prospect of a new studio space in Castellaw that can be used by Lariat TV News and the Lariat’s podcast teams. Building skills in a professional environment will help all of our students, no matter what career path they choose,” Student Media Director Doug Pils said.

These renovations will not only modernize the facility but also make a significant step toward fostering creativity and collaboration in digital communications among students and faculty members. Baylor JPR&NM has added furnishings and artwork to create inviting, student-centered common areas.

“Our faculty members are dedicated and committed to providing students with innovative tools and spaces that reflect the professional world,” said Dr. Mia Moody, professor and JPR&NM chair.

Donors, including Baylor alums and the College of Arts & Sciences, will help make the project a reality.

“These changes have been a long time coming,” Moody said. “We have added furnishings and made changes to decor, but this is the big change that is needed to take our program to the next level.”

The following faculty members will serve on the Facilities Committee: Tefertiller (chair), Professors Kevin Tankersley, Sharon Gripp, Stephen Green, Doug Pils, and Dr. Elizabeth Bates, as well as Drs. James Kendrick (incoming interim chair) and Moody (ex officio).
