Passport to Media Literacy Welcomes Travelers on Mis/Disinformation Journey
Baylor Libraries, in conjunction with the Department of Journalism, Public Relations and New Media, and NPR-affiliate KWBU, welcome travelers to pick up a passport and experience a journey into better media literacy on the Garden Level of Moody Memorial Library on the campus of Baylor University from 2 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 2.
Passport to Media Literacy is designed to improve understanding of news media through interactive experiences guided by subject experts. Upon arrival, participants will receive a passport and collect stamps as they move from one experience to another. When their passport is full, they will receive KWBU swag and a Dr Pepper float.
“Media literacy is crucial in today's information-rich environment, especially given the prevalence of misinformation and disinformation, as we have seen in the upcoming election,” said Ellen Filgo, Library Liaison for Journalism, Public Relations, and New Media.
Each Passport to Media Literacy attendee will explore various forms of media to improve their ability to distinguish between reliable sources and misinformation.
“I am most excited about the opportunity to connect students with resources to empower them to become smart media consumers, particularly as we get closer to this year's election,” said Rachel Velasco, KWBU Community Engagement Coordinator.
Bringing a breadth of perspectives from national public media, librarianship, and the academy to this experience will provide participants with a well-rounded perspective on media literacy.
“I hope attendees become more informed about the importance of critical thinking when consuming media messages. It has become increasingly difficult to gauge the legitimacy of media content,” said Mia-Moody Ramirez, Chair of Journalism, Public Relations and News Media.
