The Society of Professional Journalists was founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi. The organization possesses a rich heritage that strives first to bring to journalism a dedication to service worthy of a great and honorable profession. SPJ works on a national level to preserve the First Amendment and freedom of the press through grass-roots movements.

From print to public relations, from online to photo, to broadcast to radio, SPJ incorporates all types of journalism into its organization. SPJ seeks to connect journalists from all areas with one another and offers ample networking opportunities for members.
