On Friday, Nov. 14, the Department of Journalism, Public Relations & New Media took a career tour to Austin, Texas. About 30 students and chaperones attended the tour, traveling to Texas Monthly and The Texas Tribune.
Upon arrival at Texas Monthly, the students received a tour of the office located in downtown Austin. CEO Scott Brown and Editor-in-Chief Ross McCammon spoke to the students about company culture, corporate goals and business operations.
The day also included a tour of The Texas Tribune. Located just down the street from Texas Monthly, the visit to The Tribune newsroom provided a different perspective on the industry.
Andy Alford, director of recruitment, training and career development at The Texas Tribune shared information about internships, fellowships and career opportunities available to students. Andrea Kosar, general manager of The Waco Bridge (an editorially independent newsroom supported by The Tribune), also spoke to students during the visit. By the end of the day, the group had heard from nearly 30 industry professionals.
“I learned a lot about both the editorial and business aspects of magazine publication,” senior public relations major Elizabeth Johnson said. “I found it really interesting and honestly might look further into Texas Monthly as I continue on the job hunt.”
This career tour was made possible through the support of our department’s Board of Advocates. Not only did the Board support this trip financially, but member Robert Davila planned and coordinated the trip itinerary at his home base, Texas Monthly. Board members Preston Kirk and Jill Petri also participated as chaperones. Also attending the career tour were coordinator Lauren Spears and faculty members Stephen Green, Sharon Gripp, Kim Patterson and Tamara Welter.
“This was a very special and memorable career tour, and I loved and deeply value the opportunity they gave the … students. In every way, I was blown away and inspired,” senior news editorial major Kaylee Hayes said.
The Baylor Career Center also supported this trip by coordinating and providing bus transportation for the students and chaperones. Many thanks to Jalyn Monken for assisting our department once again with the planning of this trip.
The Department of Journalism, Public Relations & New Media plans to continue providing experiential learning opportunities through career tours each semester. If you would like to support our efforts to do so, we invite you to donate to our department’s Excellence Fund. These funds give the department the ability offer career tours and networking opportunities at no cost to our students.
